In most cases, mycotoxin intoxication occurs gradually. When animals ingest subclinical amounts of toxins for a prolonged period, the signs of growth reduction and lower performance might be observed but not traced back to mycotoxins.
Traditional methods used to detect and determine the level of damage causing mycotoxins in feed ingredients and/or rations are dependent on collecting a representative sample.
Histopathology—the study of changes in tissues caused by disease—has been used to demonstrate that toxic agents are affecting swine and poultry, even when traditional tests are negative. Depending on the type of mycotoxin and animal species, prolonged exposure to mycotoxins results in lesions to target organs.
Discover how you can perform a evaluation of these lesions, either at the slaughterhouse or when performing post mortems on farm.
